A DYKE CABIN OF ONE’S OWN by Dani Klebes
For the 5th iteration of Upstate Art Weekend, Elijah Wheat becomes a nomad, honored to command the “Mother-in-Laws” space in Germantown, NY.
“A DYKE CABIN OF ONE’S OWN” will be a respite of fifty plus sculptural paintings replete with gay ephemera, referencing country living and rural tropes. With Klebes’ notable installation take-overs of spaces this promises to add: punches of life-sized colorful figures, modern still lives of liquor bottles, hunting trophies, motorcycle jackets, cars, instruments, books, while putting more 'Queer' in Country.
Klebes explains: “A Dyke Cabin of One’s Own is an immersive installation inspired by motorcycle culture, rural life, and the experience of being a queer person in those spaces. The installation transforms Mother in Law’s into an intimate one room cabin full of oil on canvas paintings and cut panel paintings of objects including motorcycle helmets, books, taxidermy, and guitars. The title references Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own, in which she writes, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” In A Dyke Cabin of One’s Own, I explore similar themes including barriers to entry, ownership, belonging, identity.”
Danielle Klebes lives and works at Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY. Danielle has exhibited in notable galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. These include recent solo shows at NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, NY, Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY, Jennifer Terzian Gallery in Litchfield, CT, AVA Gallery in Lebanon, NH, Installation Space in North Adams, MA, and L'Atelier Silex Gallery in Trois- Rivières, Quebec, Canada. She has also been included in recent group shows at MoCA Jacksonville in Jacksonville, FL, Galleri Christoffer Egelund in Copenhagen, Denmark, Springfield Museums, Springfield, MA, and Grove Collective in London, UK. Danielle received her MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA, in 2017
